June 27th

June 27th is DJ Screw's most popular screw tape, famous for a 38-minute long freestyle over the track "Da Streets Ain't Right" by Kris Kross. The University of Houston Libraries DJ Screw Sound Recordings Collection contains four of the records with songs that were used on June 27th. Although DJ Screw may have used a different physical album, it's also possible that this exact copy was used to record the screw tape. The tape was named after and recorded for the birthday of Big DeMo, a rapper and close friend of Screw, on June 27th, 1996. Screw's tapes are unique insofar as they were hyper-local and often reference Houston street names and neighborhoods, creating a strong connection for any Houstonian. June 27th is often known as an unofficial city-wide holiday in Houston due to the popularity of the tape. Canadian rapper Drake was inspired by the song to make a version of his own, highlighting Screw's national and international reach.

"And what made the tapes special was there was an exclusive freestyle that was attached. It was something you couldn't get anywhere else and it was the people around your area talking about not only the culture, but talking about the neighborhood you lived in or streets you were familiar with, so it made it real personal for us."
