The Lion, Unicorn & Dragon Dance
These dances are performed in Southeast Asian communities in Houston and worldwide and represent happiness and auspiciousness. In reality, all three – lion, unicorn and dragon – are names that are English approximations referring to stylized and mythic beasts created to ferociously combat evil. Thus, they serve as symbols of protection and good luck and, as a result, are especially associated with bringing in the new year by chasing out bad omens from the past and clearing the way for new beginnings.
The lion costume has two performers inside, serving as head and tail. The elaborate costume head is broad and usually made from papier-mache. The length of cloth, equally colorful, represents the body and tail of the lion. The lion dance requires great agility and endurance acquired through extensive martial arts training.
