Student

Sherrill began pursuing a degree in business administration at the University of Houston in fall 1946. He was active in student government and helped found the UH chapter of Alpha Phi Omega (APO). In student government he was elected class president three times and held numerous other positions. He served alongside close friends and acquaintances, including his wife Sue Sherrill. He graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in 1950.

During his senior year, Sherrill began thinking about going to graduate school when his marketing professor introduced him to a guest speaker from Harvard. Sherrill at first struggled with graduate school but quickly learned how to improve his work. He remained involved with student organizations as he did during his undergraduate studies, and also took part in intramural sports. Sherrill graduated with his MBA in 1952, at the top third of his class with distinction in finance and manufacturing.
