John and Rebecca Moores gave UH a gift of $51 million as part of the Creative Partnerships Campaign to fund construction of the Athletics/Alumni Center, name the Moores School of Music and fund construction of its building, as well as provide for scholarships, professorships, and many other projects. At the time, this represented the largest gift to a university in a one-year period. The Athletics/Alumni Center was dedicated in 1995 and the Moores School of Music building in 1997.

1994

A small UH satellite containing various scientific experiments was launched from the Space Shuttle Discovery, on the first of three flights for the payload developed by the university's Space Vacuum Epitaxy Center. A grant from NASA established the center in 1986.

1997

The administrations of the UH System and the University of Houston were combined under a single chief executive officer, with the dual title of Chancellor of the UH System and President of the University of Houston. Arthur K. Smith was the first individual to hold the combined position, becoming the UH System's sixth chancellor and the University of Houston's eleventh president.
